Frequently Asked Questions

What are the founding principles of Parallax Futures?
  • We believe the truest form of collaboration happens when the best and brightest multi-dimensionally diverse talent are brought together.
  • We believe in the power of emergent technologies and their potential to shape the future.
  • We believe it is our responsibility as humans to harness this potential and explore new possibilities.

By bringing together individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, disciplines, and perspectives, we create an environment where innovation thrives. Marry this with the potential of emerging technologies and the result is our collective diversity fostering creativity and breakthroughs necessary for abundant futures.

Through this limitless collaboration, we will unlock the full potential of new and future technology, paving the way for positive futures where these advancements unleash progress, equality and alignment between all living things inclusive of new innovations and the world around us.

How many fellows are accepted to the program?

We accept 12 fellows per cycle. We run two cycles per year minimum, one in the winter and one in the summer.

How do I get nominated for the program?
Everyone is encouraged to apply, however, we do require an initial nomination from someone in our network in order to process your application.
Who are the conceptual thinking subject matter experts on staff?
The subject matter experts on staff change with each fellowship cycle. In each cycle, Parallax Futures Senior Fellows from the prior cycle will lead the Learn, Explore, Build program phases together with renowned project advisors. To view current cycle experts, please visit The Team.
How is Parallax Futures different from an incubator, accelerator, think tank?

Incubators and accelerators provide resources and support for startups with established visions, while we teach fellows to harness conceptual thinking skills as applied to technology. Think Tanks focus on research and analysis, while we actively encourage exploration, discovery, and play to master conceptual thinking. Finally, our unique multi-dimensional diversity requirement combined with world-renowned mentors and the development of an abundant mindset sets us apart as a distinctive hub for fostering innovative ideas that shape positive futures.

How is this organization culturally relevant?

We embody a very progressive and inclusive ethos that celebrates diverse collaboration. By blending emerging technology with conceptual thinking, we foster a dynamic space where multi-dimensionally diverse talents converge, driving innovation through their unique perspectives.

Our approach has similarities to design thinking, however we introduce a framework for approaching technology through a specific lens.  Like design thinking, we emphasize creativity and innovation, however, our approach is not not focused on human-centered solutions to existing problems or iterative processes to shorten development cycles. Instead we focus on conceptual thinking applied to technology in order to explore the technologies’ potential and possibilities beyond harnessing tech to solve existing everyday problems.

How does Parallax Futures address AI and ethics?

While some of our experimentation areas explore ethical topics, Parallax Futures is not an AI ethics organization.  Through our conceptual analysis, we challenge the societal norms on which present day ethics is focused.  We encourage Fellows to consider whether the norms that are implicit in our technology actually do apply to our present day, and if not, how to challenge those concepts and create new ones.

What do I get for my participation as a Parallax Futures fellow?

Fellows are credentialed as Conceptual Technologists and get special access to the former ToftH and current Parallax Futures communities, events, and research.

How much is tuition?

The Parallax Futures fellowship does not require tuition. Qualifying Fellow participants are eligible for a stipend of up to $5,000 for final project materials and supplies.

Does Parallax Futures address any of the United Nations'Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Yes, Parallax Futures is designed to address Goal 10.  With the creation of Conceptual Technologists globally we hope to address Goal 8.
